the movie

I loved the movie. It was nice to hear their expression in there voices. I like how the hand of her dead friend was shown in the movie unlike the book. I stayed until the end of the movie so I was able to get the full feel for the movie. It was also nice that it was in English.

finishing persepolis

Ok so I liked this book better than the other one. It was easier to read and it wasn't as gory. At one point I actually had trouble at putting it down. I like how it is written with cushions for every thing that happens.

Reading

Ok so I read up to page 120 a little more than we were supposed to but I got caught up in the book. Growing up in a Jewish school Iwas forced to learn about the revolution but while reading this book I was finally able to get their side of the story. I was drawn into the story and had trouble putting the book down.
I like how the dead are depicted as laying down in staright lines.
It bothered me how the father went to the maids lover and explained that she was really a maid and not his daughter. I felt so bad for her loosing someong she cared for so much.
I enjoy how the book goes back in time briefly at some points, I never lose track of what time period it is.
So far Persepolis has really impressed me. I look forward to reading the last of it.

first two chapters

ok so I read the first two chapters of the second book of maus, I really did not like it. These books are making me really upset. However, I do like the way on some of the pages the charcters are shaded black, but I can not figure out what it means.

finishing first book of maus

group one
topic 3
p99 lines showing he is scared
p96 phone ringing
p143 lines to show darkness in closet
146 lines to show darkness

So in reading the rest of the first book, it made me very upset. I mean everything is written very well, but I would rather not put myself in the this story. I like how the style of everything doesn't change throughout the book, and there is nothing absract.

maus chapters 1-2

group 1

I find the topic of the holocaust extremely difficult to deal with. In high school I took a college credit course on this and had a lot of trouble staying in the room when the movies where playing. I really hope these books are better, and more tolerable. Also I know some survivors and have heard there stories so I would like to compare this book to what i haev heard.

p21 when on the phone the way it is written
p 20 when lucia is on the floor begging there is nothing abstract to represent this
p28 worry with the marks of sweat coming off his face

blankets chapters 1-2

The amount of pictures vary, however, when Thompson is making a dramatic scene there seems to be only one picture per page.
on page 89 I liked how it showed meeting different types of people, even those who are going against the rules.
p93 Why does this scene take up one page?
p208-209 why have jesus, and her naked?

fun home chapters 3-7

On page 100 I asked myself was is there a picture of a semi naked guy, what was the meaning of having this here.
Books all over…kind of a mess…disorinting … feels like she is in the womb she is in the fetal postion.
Page 79 in the fetal postion talking to her family on te phone same book on th phone
With mycloud in mind why does she put the photoes in a completely different imagiry than the rest of the book? The less relaistic they are so we can put ourselves in them, so we can relate to them.
Age 94 last panel smiling just a little bit
P219 biggest his eye is
You see his handwriting.
Timeless pp179 first time you get a full veiw of everything see there world see the tree tipped ove rin the back. See the house. Sort of weight to te photo.
Transitions…action to action
Aspect to aspect
On page 70 mcloud lists the actions. The doment form of transtion in western is action to action
P220 221 we have one block eveything is the same size
3-5 images per pages
relationships with words and pictures

for spet 25

In chapter 5 I was impressed by how they showed how emotions are expressed in graphic novels. On page 126, McCloud uses different types of boxes to show emotion in different ways. However, I was really impressed with page 129 when the girl blows the boy a kiss to show how symbols work. Since symbols are frequently used in graphic novels, I was quite happy when this was presented.
On page 148 I like how different art is represented throughout different cultures and times.

last chapters of blankets

As in the first chapters, the last two chapters also are majority scene to scene. I really enjoy this style, it really allows the reader to be drawn into the story.
page 242 the style of the painting was scene to scene
I like how it was placed to the side, it really grabs a readers eye.
page 580 went out of the normal and was moment to moment, I think the reasoning was to make a dramatic ending, which was acompished very well.

first post on blankets

pages 34-35 seems to be moment to moment with the way the boxs are postioned and how he is panicing.
pages 38-39 really got my attention because it seems different from the way everything else is styled, it seemed as if it was scene to scene...I realy appreciated the way the words were written in the bottom of the boxs.
the first two chapters are mostly scene to scene.

yeay new book

Ok so i actually read this book the first day I bought it, and I loved it. So I am now rereading it and trying not to let the rest of the book effect my opinion.

The first two chapters where amazing I love how she brings her opinion about her father in right after his death. She als has a great way of wording thins, but I don't have the book on me at the moment to type an example, I will try to come back later and edit this entry.

I also like how she describes how close her family lives to her and how she shows it.

nest couple of chapters

Ok, so I have read the next chapters in "how to read comics," and I must say I have been very impressed by the amount of art work and they way things were written. So far the author has been very good at describing different types of comic books and they way they are written. However, even though many of his writings are interesting I still find them boring because a lot of this I already know, though, much of his writing is teaching me how to look at comic books differently and analize them.
In my dorm room I have a japenese anime book that I have read and I reread it and looked at it differently and I enjoyed the book much more.

yeay comic books

Ok so first off I love comic books and manga so reading this book was fun but also boring. This information is nothing new to me. But I liked how they put it in comic book style I thought that was a good idea. So this blog entry might be a little short because I really do not have much to say on the matter. The boring parts were the discripitve ones. I dislike when comic books are like that but atleast they have pictures to take your mind off the matter.

Richard's

First paragraph- I was really impressed with how descriptive she was, it really helped me get into the story. Why is this happening to the grandmother? I feel bad that she is losing her memory. I can connect to the family members because my grandfather lost his memory and I watched him forget his childrens names, just forget his whole family. I watched my mother weep silently...watching her father in pain. So I feel depressed for this family.
I like that Richards is not to scientifical. She is descriptive at just the right points. I enjoyed reading her short story.
It saddens me that she is losing her memory, I wish there was something that I could do. She keeps imagining things, it hurts me to see someone deteriorate like that.

Over all I think this was the best essay I have read in this class.

O.o new work

Ok so I read The American Man at Age Ten by Orlean and I hated it. I could not find a plot . What was the point?
Where is she going with this?
How is this ending a closing?
Does anyone else understand or interested in this short story?
Last week I accidently read "Bumping into Mr. Ravioli" to see what I wrote on that please refer to my previous post.
Benson:
I like that it was really short. My first opinion on her short story was what is wrong with her sister. Is she mentally healthy? Did something happen to her when she was younger?
What was the point of the ending?
Where is the conclusion?

Blog 2

Ok so I started to read the work of Gopnik and was right away pulled into the story. However, as the story progressed I started to lose interest. Gopnik started getting way to scientifical blabbering on about dull facts about imaginary friends.
Two pages later Gopnik is still filling this story with dry facts. Where is the interesting part?
Once again where is the interesting part?
Where is the plot?
Onto Richards... first 2 pages...depressing...why is this happening to the grandmother? I feel bad that she is losing her memory. I can connect to the family members because my grandfather lost his memory and I watched him forget his childrens names, just forget his whole family. I watched my mother weep silently...watching her father in pain. So I feel depressed for this family.
I like that Richards is not to scientifical. She is descriptive at just the right points. I enjoyed reading her short story.

First assignment O.o

My opinion on the work of Jo Ann Beard is that truthfully I did not find it interesting at all. her writing was so descriptive that it almost put me to sleep. She writes in reference to her dog, "She drinks prodigious amounts of water and pees in great volumes onto the folded blankets where she sleep." I find this sentence way to wordy . The majority of her sentence are long and boring almost as if she is being paid per word. Ahhhhh I truthfully hated her writing so hopefully I will have more to write about Cooper so I will be able to fulfill the writing requirements for a page.

Ok so it's been like 5 mins or so and I read the first 2 pages. My comments on that O.o I loved the Jewish part, made me laugh, probably because I am Jewish and have had many encounters with people pronouncing food and my middle name wrong. Anyways back to the story.

So I finished the required reading for this week and I must say that I loved Cooper's writing. I can not believe I actually enjoyed something a teacher assigned, kind of a shock. About the story, I loved the fact that it was not one of those straight love tales, there are to many of those, but in fact it was about a gay guy. The character made me feel like I just wanted to be there and explain to him that there is nothing wrong with being gay. However, I did not like the fact that his mother had a vibe that she did not want any child of hers to be gay.

The author put me directly in the story it was almost if as I could touch them. I definitely enjoyed this story. The story by Beard I was unable to relate to in any shape or form, however the story from Cooper I could relate to in the way that many of my friends and even some of my family members are gay.

Well that is todays blog entry and now I am going to finally get my lunch :)
